Amatller Spanish Hot Chocolate Nibs, 400g

Amatller Drinking Chocolate 45% with Cinnamon is a traditional Spanish hot chocolate, made in Barcelona from 45% cocoa with a warm note of cinnamon and a little maize starch to give it that famously thick texture. Amatller have been making chocolate in the city since 1797, and this is the “a la taza” style Catalans have drunk for generations - rich and spoonable rather than milky. Ours comes as nibs in a 400g tin decorated with Amatller’s distinctive Modernist artwork, a nod to the posters the company once commissioned from artists such as Alphonse Mucha.

Warm the nibs through with milk and within a few minutes they thicken into a dark, glossy chocolate drink - sweet without being cloying, with the cinnamon rounding things off rather than taking over. It’s made for dunking: churros are the classic partner, but a buttery croissant, a slice of toasted brioche or a few crisp biscuits all do the job on a cold afternoon. The tin is far too nice to throw away once it’s empty, and it makes a lovely gift for anyone who takes their hot chocolate seriously.

How to use:

• For one cup, warm 150ml of milk in a small pan over a low-medium heat, add 50g of nibs and stir continuously for 4-5 minutes until melted and thickened into a dark, glossy drink. Don’t let it boil.
• For a slightly lighter cup, use 200ml of milk to 50g of nibs, or swap a little of the milk for water
  
• Pour into small cups and serve with churros, or as an after-dinner treat with a few almond biscuits
